WHAT IS POINTING?
Pointing is the process of filling the outer part of the joints between masonry units with mortar.
WHAT IS REPOINTING?
Repointing is the process of removing/replacing existing pointing that has failed over time. Use of incorrect mortar, and the general passage of time and the effects of weather can result in the failure of the mortar between the masonry units.
WHY DO I NEED TO REPOINT MY PROPERTY?
Once the mortar joint fails in any way, the brickwork and building is at the mercy of further damage and disintegration. The actions of rain and frost can further penetrate and damage the brickwork, leading to more expense and an unsightly exterior. Our extensive repointing services can help you avoid this scenario. However, if the worst has happened, we are also experts in all aspects of brick and stone repair and can further weatherproof your masonry and lime mortar looking it’s best for years to come.
WHAT IS LIME MORTAR REPOINTING AND DO I NEED IT?
Lime mortar is a traditional material used to point brickwork that dates back over 6000 years, to ancient Egypt, where it was used to plaster the pyramids. In the UK, nearly all properties built prior to 1920, would almost certainly have been pointed with Lime mortar
Lime mortar is porous and breathable, so it allows the movement of water or water vapour in and out of the brickwork, enabling the masonry to ‘breathe’.
But I thought you just said that water getting in to my bricks was not good?
Bricks and stone are naturally able to absorb and release moisture through the lime mortar joints, and older houses were built with this in mind. The issues arise when incorrect mortar (cement based) is used on older properties. Cementitious mortar will prevent this natural release of water/vapour through the mortar joints, forcing the water to exit through the brick itself.
Over time, pressure builds behind the face of the brick, and eventually it will ‘pop off’. This is called spalling, and it further exposes the brick work, which then makes the brick more vulnerable to further damage by weather, rain, frost etc.
HOW MUCH DOES LIME MORTAR REPOINTING COST?
To give an accurate price for repointing your property with Lime Mortar we would need to conduct a full survey of your property. Costing will vary from property to property depending on the work involved. Many things need to be factored, including:
- Ease of access
- Scaffolding requirements
- Mortar removal
- Building size / shape
- Age of the property
- The time of year
